For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Start reading at Hebrews 5:11 (Hebrews 5:11 to Hebrews 5:14). An editorial reading unit, not a claim that the surrounding context stops here. Book background below applies to the shared passage; individual verses may need more specific explanation.

The exposition pauses to address the hearers' dullness and need for maturity, an exhortation that continues into chapter 6.

  1. 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
  2. 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
  3. 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
  4. 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Who wrote it, and how we know

Uncertain; Pauline authorship is held by many Not known
What Scripture saysThe letter does not name its author.
Early traditionAncient opinion was divided. Some in the East accepted Pauline authorship; Origen concluded that only God knows who wrote it. Tertullian suggested Barnabas.
What is debatedThe author is genuinely unknown. The polished Greek and the manner of citing Scripture differ from Paul's letters. Claiming certainty here overstates the evidence.
