Ephesians 5:25-28 sets an extraordinary standard: husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it. This is the highest calling any husband can receive.

Sacrificial Love

Christ's love for the Church was not based on performance. He loved us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). A husband is called to love his wife unconditionally — not only when she is easy to love, but especially when it costs something.

Servant Leadership

Christ led by serving. He washed His disciples' feet (John 13:1-17). A husband who leads like Christ does not demand to be served — he looks for ways to serve. This can be as simple as helping with household responsibilities, truly listening, or stepping up with the children.

Nourishing and Cherishing

Ephesians 5:29 says Christ feeds and cares for the Church. A husband nourishes his wife by encouraging her spiritual growth — praying with her, studying Scripture together, supporting her gifts and calling.

Protecting

Christ protects His Church. A husband provides emotional safety by being trustworthy, keeping his word, and guarding against anything that threatens the marriage.

Pursuing

Christ pursues His people relentlessly. A husband should never stop pursuing his wife — dating her, learning about her, growing with her, and fighting for the relationship even when it is hard.

"Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." — 1 John 3:16 (KJV)

This standard is impossible in human strength alone. A husband who loves like Christ must depend on Christ. As we abide in Him, His love flows through us and transforms our marriages.
