Few topics receive more attention in Scripture than the power of our words. James 3:5-6 compares the tongue to a small spark that sets a great forest on fire. Proverbs 18:21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue.

Think Before Speaking

Proverbs 15:28 says the heart of the righteous studieth to answer. A pause between thought and speech can prevent enormous regret.

Speak Truth with Love

Ephesians 4:15 calls believers to speak the truth in love. Truth without love becomes harsh. Love without truth becomes flattery. God calls us to both.

Use Words to Encourage

Ephesians 4:29 instructs us to let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouths, but that which is good to the use of edifying. Every conversation is an opportunity to strengthen someone.

Avoid Gossip

Proverbs 16:28 warns that a whisperer separateth chief friends. If you would not say it in front of the person being discussed, it should probably not be said.

Be Slow to Speak

James 1:19 is practical wisdom for every relationship: be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.

The Heart Behind the Words

Jesus taught that words are an overflow of the heart (Luke 6:45). The most effective way to tame the tongue is to surrender the heart daily to God's transforming work.

"Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." — Psalm 141:3 (KJV)

We cannot tame the tongue in our own strength — but the Holy Spirit can.
